Sarasota has some of the most stunning engagement photo locations in Florida, and The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art is at the top of that list. When Sophia and Ben came to me through their wedding planner, I already knew this session was going to be something special. She’d spent real time looking for the right Florida engagement photographer—someone whose editing style matched her vision and whose energy would make Ben comfortable in front of a camera.
They’re getting married at the Powel Crosley Estate in Sarasota next March, and they wanted their engagement session to feel like a preview of what their wedding day photography would be. Sophia’s inspiration was cinematic and intentional: think in-love Hollywood couples, close and present, with an elevated editorial quality. The Ringling Museum was the perfect place to bring that vision to life.
Engagement Photos at The Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota
The Ringling Museum is one of those locations that photographs unlike anything else in Florida. The blush-pink walls, the arched colonnades flanked by white marble columns, the ornate carved doorways, the 13,000-square-foot chevron marble terrace overlooking Sarasota Bay—it’s a lot of visual beauty to work with. The estate was built in the 1920s by John and Mable Ringling (yes, the circus family!) as their winter residence and art museum, and the architecture pulls from Venetian Gothic, Italian Renaissance, and Mediterranean Revival styles. In other words, it looks like you flew to Europe. We took full advantage of every corner of the property, and Sophia and Ben showed up ready to bring the energy.

What to Wear for Engagement Photos at The Ringling
Sophia came prepared with two completely different looks, and both were perfect for this location. For the first half of the session, she wore an ivory two-piece set that was chic and modern, and she brought a hat with an attached veil that elevated the whole thing into something editorial. The citrus green heels were the kind of styling decision I love: unexpected, playful, and so good against the blush and marble. For the second half of the photoshoot, Sophia changed into a floral green dress that brought warmth, movement, and a completely different energy. Ben wore a white shirt and khakis—clean and classic, which let Sophia lead the visual story without competing with the backdrop.

Ca’ d’Zan: The Ringling Museum’s Most Iconic Photo Spot
Ca’ d’Zan (which means “House of John” in the Venetian dialect) is the crown jewel of the Ringling estate. Designed by architect Dwight James Baum in 1926, the mansion’s 56 rooms and sprawling bayfront terrace have become one of the most recognizable landmarks in Sarasota. Here’s a look at the spots we captured during Sophia and Ben’s session.
Iconic Pink Stucco Archways & Corridors
The blush-pink arched corridors are the most visually dramatic spot on the property. Ornate iron lanterns hang from the vaulted ceiling, white marble columns frame each arch, and the long perspective lines create a naturally cinematic composition. I prompted Sophia and Ben to walk hand in hand toward the camera, catching quiet moments tucked into the archways and portraits between the columns with bright flowers blooming just beyond.

Chevron Marble Bayside Terrace
The bayside terrace at Ca’ d’Zan is 13,000 square feet of colorful marble laid out in a chevron pattern, sitting right on the edge of Sarasota Bay with views in every direction. We used the ornate balustrade for portraits, the open terrace for wide shots, and the bay as the backdrop for some of the most romantic images of the day.

Ornate Doorways and Carved Details
The exterior of Ca’ d’Zan is covered in detail: carved baroque stonework, Gothic pointed arches, colored glass windows, and decorative terra cotta ornaments. We used the grand doorways as a backdrop for solo portraits of Sophia and couples portraits of the two of them together. The warm tones of the stone against the blush walls created the most beautiful natural color palette.

Old Hollywood Energy: Romantic, Cinematic Connection
Sophia’s inspiration was clear from the start—she wanted engagement photos that felt like an in-love Hollywood couple. Close, present, and intentional. Not posed for the camera but genuinely absorbed in each other. Creating that vibe meant prioritizing intimacy in every frame: bodies turned toward each other, foreheads touching, hands interlaced. I kept my direction simple and specific, guiding them into moments rather than positions. When you prompt a couple to whisper something in each other’s ear instead of asking them to smile, you get a completely different kind of image.
Ahead of our session, Sophia shared that Ben tends to be a bit camera-shy. It was one of the reasons she was so deliberate about her choice to hire me as her engagement and wedding photographer. By the end of the session Ben was relaxed, laughing, and fully in it. Helping couples find that warm, fun energy is one of my specialties, and it’s the reason why the images I capture feel so natural, genuine, and full of connection.

Why The Ringling Museum Is One of the Best Florida Engagement Photo Locations
There are a lot of beautiful engagement photo locations in Florida, but The Ringling Museum is in its own category. The sheer range of looks you can achieve within a single property is remarkable, and the warm tones of the Ca’ d’Zan exterior catch light beautifully at different times of day. The Venetian Gothic architecture photographs with an old-world elegance that’s hard to find anywhere else in the state.
It’s also worth noting that The Ringling is a Central Florida wedding venue—both the Ca’ d’Zan terrace and the Museum of Art courtyard host ceremonies and receptions. If you’re engaged and considering Sarasota as a wedding destination, this is a location worth exploring for both your engagement photos and your wedding day. If you’re still deciding on the right Florida engagement photo location, I’d love to show you a few other sessions I’ve photographed in unique outdoor spots: sailboat portraits on Tampa Bay at sunset, a casual garden session at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, and a sunrise beach session at Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral.

On the drive home, Ben wouldn’t stop saying how much fun he had and how happy he was with my choice of photographer. I spent a lot of time researching different photographers and was very intentional with my choice, and yesterday working with you reassured me it was the right one!”
